Blue Jays Morning Brew: Joe Smith details, Happy birthday Roberto Alomar, and more

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 8:58 p.m. ET

Your Toronto Blue Jays new and notes for Monday, Feb 6th, 2017. It was Super Bowl Sunday yesterday, so it’s pretty thin today, friends.

Waiting on Joe Smith contract details

The news of the Blue Jays signing RH reliever Joe Smith flooded Twitter late on Saturday night, but it’s been relatively quiet since. The Blue Jays have yet to formally announce the detail, or release any of the financial details. At this point, all we know is that it’s a 1 year, major league contract.

It’s likely that Smith will need to pass a physical before the deal is confirmed, and we should know more details in the coming days.

The side-winder has a 3.46 ERA last season in 52 games split between the Los Angeles Angels and Chicago Cubs. He is an 11 year veteran, who also has some brief closing experience, saving 15 games in 2014.

Happy Birthday Robbie!

Blue Jays legend, Roberto Alomar, turned 49 on Sunday. If you’ve been living under a rock, Alomar is a Hall of Famer and was a key part of the Blue Jays championship teams in 1992 and ’93.

Alomar finished his career with a .300/.371/.443 slash line, 12 All-Star appearances, and 10 Gold Gloves, and played for the Blue Jays from 1991-1995 (I thought it was longer too), as well as the Orioles, Mets, Padres, White Sox, Diamondbacks and Cleveland Indians.

Stroman “dropping” new song on Super Bowl Sunday

When Marcus Stroman isn’t in the gym or on the mound, you can sometimes find him dabbling in the music world.

The young pitcher’s talents extend beyond the baseball field, and if you’ve got a moment to check it out, you should. It’s not half bad. (heed the Parental Advisory though…)

The countdown continues

Because we don’t have a whole heck of a lot else to discuss today, hopefully this tweet lifts your spirits as much as it did mine.
