One of five Astros to COVID IL The Astros placed Garcia on the injured list Wednesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Impact Garcia was one of five players Houston placed on the IL on Wednesday without an injury designation, indicating that each member of the quintet has been ruled out due to COVID-19-related protocols. No reports have come out yet specifying whether Garcia (or any of the other four Astros) tested positive for the virus, or if the players in question have been ruled out through contact tracing. Alex De Goti was one of five players called up from the alternate site in corresponding moves, and he should be the primary replacement for Garcia as a utility man for Houston.

Enters for Bregman in blowout Garcia entered Tuesday's game for Alex Bregman prior to the seventh inning of an 8-2 loss to Detroit.

Impact Houston manager Dusty Baker will look for spots to rest Bregman, who dealt with hamstring issues during spring training and was held out of at least one regular-season game due to sore legs. Garcia has barely played in 2021, appearing in five games (no starts) and going 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

Impact The Angels evidently didn't think too highly of Garcia, as they dropped him after picking up Jack Mayfield, a 30-year-old with a career .481 OPS. Garcia hit five homers in 31 games in his big-league debut for the Cubs in 2019 but also struck out 43.8 percent of the time, leading to a .208/.275/.500 slash line. He didn't get into any major-league games last season.

Impact Just over three months after the Mets claimed him off waivers from the Reds, Garcia will be cast off the 40-man roster. The 27-year-old switch-hitter will cede his spot to pitcher Jordan Yamamoto, whom the Mets acquired in a trade with the Marlins on Monday.

Impact Garcia held his own in his 31-game debut for the Cubs in 2019, hitting a lopsided but respectable .208/.275/.500. A 43.8 percent strikeout rate didn't bode particularly well for the future, however, and he failed to make a single plate appearances for either the Cubs or the Reds this season. Heading into his age-28 season, he's likely not a major part of the Mets' plans going forward.
