INJURIES

Works non-save situation Trivino fired a scoreless ninth inning in a 9-5 win over the Diamondbacks on Monday, allowing one hit and recording a strikeout.
Impact With the Athletics having doubled up what had been a two-run lead in the top half of the frame, Trivino narrowly missed out on his first save chance of the season but still succeeded in preserving the victory. The 29-year-old has one hold and a sparkling 1.17 ERA and 0.65 WHIP across 7.2 innings covering his first six appearances. He's slated to serve as the primary closer while Trevor Rosenthal progresses through a multi-month recovery from surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome.

Impact The right-hander has carried over his momentum from an excellent spring into the regular season, giving up just a solo home run across 5.2 innings while recording six strikeouts over four appearances. Melvin also has a seemingly appealing left-handed option for ninth-inning work in Diekman, but he noted Thursday he'd prefer to keep the veteran in a setup role whenever possible. Meanwhile, Trivino does have some closing experience, albeit not very successful, having converted only four of 11 save opportunities over the previous three seasons. His mid-90s fastball serves as an excellent weapon to go into into high-leverage scenarios with, but his career 4.1 BB/9 could prove problematic.

Carries over spring dominance Trivino recorded four strikeouts and allowed an earned run on a solo home run over 2.2 innings of relief in a loss to the Astros on Saturday.
Impact The 29-year-old also fired a perfect inning on Opening Day, making it a very encouraging start to the season for Trivino after an excellent spring. The right-hander could conceivably work himself back into more high-leverage relief situations as the season unfolds if he's able to continue generating a similar caliber of performance.

Impressive in first three chances Trivino has an unblemished ERA over his first three Cactus League appearances, having allowed just a hit and a walk while recording five strikeouts across three innings.
Impact The 29-year-old hasn't quite regained the form he displayed during his stellar 2018 rookie campaign, but he did enjoy a somewhat resurgent 2020 that included a 3.86 ERA and career-high 28.0 percent strikeout rate across 20 appearances. Trivino's early work this spring offers reason for optimism and supports the notion that he could be an integral setup option this coming season, offering fantasy value in leagues that count holds.

Reaches deal with A's Trivino signed a one-year, $912,500 contract with Oakland on Friday to avoid arbitration, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
Impact The 29-year-old came on strong in 2020 with a 3.86 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 26:10 K:BB across 23.1 innings. Trivino has an outside chance at the closer's role in 2021 following the departure of Liam Hendriks, though Jake Diekman is A's top internal candidate.

Impact The right-hander was able to produce his second straight scoreless appearance in Saturday's win over San Francisco, but he didn't come out of his one frame unscathed. Trivino tested himself out with some pregame throwing Sunday and was apparently deemed healthy enough to be available out of the bullpen later in the day, although any discomfort he may have still been feeling could have been partly to blame for his uneven performance.

Scoreless streak persists Trivino fired a clean ninth inning to close out a 6-0 win over the Astros on Monday.
Impact The right-hander isn't really being utilized in too many high-leverage scenarios, but manager Bob Melvin has seemingly gotten the previously struggling right-hander back on track with the way he's deployed him. Factoring in Monday's outing, the 28-year-old now has eight straight scoreless appearances; he increasingly looks like a markedly different pitcher than the one who posted a 5.25 ERA and 1.53 WHIP last season, and that started the 2020 campaign with a 9.00 ERA across his first four appearances.

Impact Trivino's ERA stood at a bloated 9.00 following an Aug. 10 appearance during which he surrendered two runs, but the right-hander has been flawless from an earned-run perspective since then. The 28-year-old has fired eight scoreless frames across six appearances since that outing, putting together an 11:4 K:BB along the way. The stretch of effective performances has brought Trivino's ERA down to a solid 3.38, and it's featured what is arguably some of his best work since a stellar 2018 rookie campaign in which he secured 23 holds alongside a 2.92 ERA and 1.14 WHIP.

Receives encouragement from skipper Trivino, who sports an elevated 7.50 ERA over his first five appearances this season, has nevertheless impressed manager Bob Melvin with how he's looked in his last pair of outings...
Impact Trivino struggled to a career-worst 5.25 ERA and 1.53 WHIP in 2019 over 61 appearances, and due to having allowed multiple earned runs in two outings this season, he once again sports an unappealing ERA. Nevertheless, Melvin sees a more effective pitcher thus far this season, noting the right-hander's fastball is showing "good life" and that Trivino's decision to mix in more off-speed pitches is one that's paying off. The 28-year-old boasts three scoreless one-inning efforts in his other two appearances, and his 8:2 K:BB over six innings underscores that he's exhibiting better control early than during a 2019 campaign when he generated a bloated 4.7 BB/9.
AUGUST 13, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Blown save against Angels Trivino was charged with a blown save Monday against the Angels, giving up two runs on two hits while striking out two in two innings.
Impact Trivino has been hit or miss this season, notching two scoreless appearances but giving up five earned runs in his other two outings. As such, the 28-year-old has a 9.00 ERA in five innings this season. He might be confined to low-leverage situations until he can turn things around.
AUGUST 11, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Bounces back Monday Trivino fired a clean ninth inning in a win over the Mariners on Monday, recording two strikeouts.
Impact Manager Bob Melvin utilized the quintessential low-leverage scenario of a 10-run read to give Trivino a chance to right the ship and get some much-needed work in. The 28-year-old had last logged an appearance six days prior against the Rockies, when he'd given up three earned runs on three hits and a walk over an inning. Trivino has sandwiched Monday's effort and another clean frame against the Angels on July 25 around the hiccup against Colorado, leaving him with a bloated 9.00 ERA that nevertheless came down a full 4.5 runs with the perfect showing against the Mariners.

Throwing again Trivino (shoulder) faced hitters in a simulated game Sunday, John Hickey of SI.com reports.
Impact Trivino reported no renewed soreness in his right shoulder coming out of the appearance, so he looks like he'll be ready to go when the Athletics open their season July 24 versus the Angels. After a tough 2019 campaign, Trivino told Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle on Thursday that he feels he's in terrific condition and "poised to repeat" his impressive rookie season. Trivino served as the Athletics' top setup man in 2018, logging a 2.92 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 82:31 K:BB across 74 innings.
