Los Angeles Angels Player News: All Positions

News: Adell is unlikely to be promoted once the major-league rosters expand in September, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Impact: Adell is one of the top prospects in baseball and has slashed .283/.362/.492 in the minors this season, but was forced to miss several months to with ankle and hamstring injuries to begin the season, which slowed his development. The team hopes to get him some winter-league at-bats after the season, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him reach the majors sometime in 2020.
News: Suarez will pitch behind opener Noe Ramirez against the White Sox on Saturday.
Impact: Suarez was expected to make his 12th start but will instead fill a primary pitcher role for the first time in his career. The 21-year-old has struggled mightily of late, giving up 14 earned runs in 12.1 innings over his last three starts. On a related note, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports that Suarez has been tipping pitches in his last 2-3 outings, which may explain his bloated numbers. Manager Brad Ausmus indicated that the issue has been corrected, providing hope that the southpaw may soon get back on track.
News: Middleton (elbow) may only require one or two more rehab appearances before being activated, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
Impact: The 25-year-old's pitches hit the mid-90s in a rehab appearance Friday, and it appears as though Middleton could be close to a return from his injury. The right-hander has not seen major-league action since undergoing Tommy John surgery in May 2018.
News: Ohtani threw a 40-pitch bullpen session Saturday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
Impact: Ohtani's velocity reportedly reached 85 mph Saturday, the highest number he's hit since undergoing Tommy John surgery. The 25-year-old also threw breaking balls for the first time since the surgery, saying that it was a good sign because his curveball hurt his elbow the most before the injury.
News: Ramirez (suspension) was activated from his three-game suspension Saturday and will serve as the opener against the White Sox.
Impact: The 29-year-old returns to the mound after missing time due to a viral infection and a three-game suspension. Ramirez owns a 3.14 ERA with a 59:16 K:BB in 34 appearances (four starts) this season.
News: Ohtani is out of the starting lineup for Saturday's matchup against the White Sox.
Impact: Mike Trout will handle designated hitting responsibilities as Brian Goodwin gets the start in center field and will hit sixth against lefty Hector Santiago. Ohtani had made nine straight starts and was 14-for-39 with seven RBI and six runs scored over that stretch. The left-handed hitting young star is slashing .253/.330/.398 in 94 plate appearances against southpaws.
News: Thaiss is out of the starting lineup for Saturday's contest against the White Sox.
Impact: Thaiss is amid a 3-for-22 stretch over his past six starts. The rookie infielder is 3-for-11 with a home run and four RBI against left-handers on the year, but he'll sit against southpaw Hector Santiago on Saturday.
News: Middleton pitched one inning for Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday, retiring all three batters with one strikeout.
Impact: After Middleton pitched a perfect frame with High-A Inland Empire on Tuesday, he took another step toward returning to the majors with a 1-2-3 seventh inning in his first Triple-A appearance Friday. He was clocked at 92-93 mph on the radar gun. Middleton has not pitched in the big leagues since damaging his UCL and undergoing Tommy John surgery in May 2018, but his return seems close.
News: Cahill pitched 1.1 scoreless innings Friday, allowing a hit and walk in a 7-2 loss to the White Sox.
Impact: Cahill entered the game with the Angels already trailing 7-2 and managed to prevent the damage from getting any worse. He's struggled with that in August, having allowed 12 runs (nine earned) over four appearances spanning eight innings this month. The right-hander has a 5.22 ERA in 29.1 innings since transitioning to the bullpen in late June.
News: Buttrey was charged with three runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning during Friday's loss to the White Sox.
Impact: The right-hander entered the game with one on and no outs in the eight inning and then loaded the bases before White Sox catcher James McCann jacked a grand slam to make it a 7-2 game. Buttrey has allowed eight runs over his last seven appearances (7.1 innings), inflating his ERA from 3.12 to 3.83 in that span. The setup man has earned 20 holds and two saves while amassing a 6-5 record across 55 appearances.
News: Hermosillo went deep three times for Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday and has now hit 10 homers in his last 11 games.
Impact: Hermosillo got off to a slow start after beginning the year on the injured list following offseason sports hernia surgery, totaling only four long balls in June and July, but he has turned things around dramatically by swatting 10 homers since Aug. 4. In 60 career major-league at-bats, the 24-year-old has hit only one home run while batting .200. He is currently the Angels' 27th-ranked prospect and should be in line for a callup when rosters expand in September.
News: Garcia tossed 1.2 scoreless relief innings Friday, allowing one hit and striking out two during a 7-2 loss to the White Sox.
Impact: Since the All-Star break, Garcia has posted a 5.17 ERA in 15.2 innings, amassing an 18:6 K:BB in that span. His season numbers are only marginally better with a 4.81 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in 48.2 innings, and he's primarily been used as a middle reliever with a couple of appearances as an opener mixed in.
News: Fletcher went 2-for-5 with a triple and a run scored in Friday's 7-2 loss to the White Sox.
Impact: Fletcher's best batting of the night came in the third inning, when he tripled off White Sox starter Lucas Giolito then scored on an infield single by Shohei Ohtani. Fletcher's other hit was a leadoff single in the first inning. The versatile infielder is 11-for-25 with five runs scored and three RBI over his last six games, with five of those hits going for extra bases. The 25-year-old is up to .287/.345/.402 with five homers, four triples and eight steals this year.
News: Trout went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 7-2 loss to the White Sox.
Impact: The center fielder's 422-foot blast off White Sox starter Lucas Giolito in the fifth inning cut the score to 3-2, but the Angels never scraped together a tying run. Trout's 41st homer of the year matches his previous career high from 2015 and keeps him tied with the Dodgers' Cody Bellinger, who also went yard Friday, for the major-league lead. Trout also has a .298/.444/.668 slash line with 94 RBI and 98 runs scored in 117 games this season.
News: Sandoval (0-1) allowed three runs on five hits and a walk over 4.1 innings Friday, striking out three and taking the loss versus the White Sox.
Impact: Sandoval got into trouble in the third inning, allowing a pair of runs, and another run scored on his watch in the fourth. The 22-year-old now has a 5.79 ERA and 1.50 WHIP through 14 innings in the majors with a 15:7 K:BB. He's penciled in for Wednesday's road start against the Rangers.
News: Bard (triceps) was activated from the 10-day injured list Friday and optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake.
Impact: Bard has been given the green light to return from the IL, though he'll head to the minor leagues for now. He's appeared in 22 games this season for Los Angeles, accruing a 5.68 ERA and 1.39 WHIP with a 25:10 K:BB over 31.2 frames.
News: Stassi is not in the lineup for Friday's game versus the White Sox.
Impact: Stassi started four of the last five contests but will take a seat after going 1-for-13 in that stretch. Anthony Bemboom will start behind the plate and bat ninth Friday.
