INJURIES

Slated to take on bullpen role Sheffield (forearm) is expected to serve as a reliever when he's reinstated from the 10-day injured list, Corey Brock of The Athletic reports.
Impact Sheffield started each of his first two rehab appearances, but he'll come out of the bullpen in Thursday's outing at Triple-A Tacoma. The southpaw had posted a 7.88 ERA and 1.99 WHIP in 45.2 innings across his 10 starts prior to his injury, so it's not too surprising to see him tagged with a bullpen role. The Mariners will likely continue to use a five-man rotation with Sheffield serving as a reliever.

Better in second rehab outing Sheffield (forearm) allowed two earned runs on three hits over four innings while recording seven strikeouts in Triple-A Tacoma's win over Sacramento on Friday, his second rehab st...
Impact Sheffield got off to a rocky start by allowing a single and a home run to the first two batters he faced, but he finished strong by retiring 12 of the last 13 batters he faced. The left-hander worked up to 66 pitches, but he's expected to make at least one more rehab appearance for Tacoma before activation is considered.

Ragged first rehab appearance Sheffield (forearm) began his rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday and allowed four runs on two hits and five walks over 1.1 innings in a loss to Las Vegas. He struck ou...
Impact The only sliver of optimism coming out of the forgettable performance may have been the fact Sheffield's forearm tolerated a 47-pitch workload right out of the gate, but only 23 of those offerings found the strike zone. The left-hander was originally slated to throw three innings, but despite the struggles, the team's official site reports the plan was always for Sheffield to work multiple rehab outings, which naturally becomes even more imperative in light of Sunday's performance.
AUGUST 19, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Rehab assignment set for Sunday Sheffield (forearm) confirmed he'll begin a rehab assignment Sunday at Triple-A Tacoma, Jen Mueller of Root Sports Northwest reports.
Impact After throwing Thursday without issue, Sheffield will head to Tacoma for his first game action since the Mariners placed him on the 10-day injured list July 7 with a left forearm strain. Since Sheffield tossed around 35 pitches in his bullpen session earlier this week, the Mariners will likely cap him at around 50 in his first rehab start. He'll likely require an additional rehab outing beyond Sunday before potentially rejoining the Seattle rotation in the final week of August.
AUGUST 12, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Rehab assignment on tap Sheffield (forearm) completed a 35-pitch bullpen session Tuesday and is expected to begin a rehab assignment this weekend, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
Impact The left-hander was originally slated to start the rehab stint Sunday with High-A Everett, but that was pushed back after a recent bullpen session. Sheffield had no issues during Tuesday's mound work, so he'll begin the rehab assignment a few days later than initially expected. He's been on the shelf since early July and will likely require a few starts in the minors before being activated.
AUGUST 11, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Rehab assignment delayed Sheffield (forearm) won't begin a rehab assignment Sunday, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports.
Impact Sheffield recently threw a bullpen and didn't feel 100 percent afterward, so he'll wait before he returns to game action. The southpaw will likely continue to throw in a controlled environment until he feels healthy enough to join a minor-league affiliate for a rehab stint.
AUGUST 7, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Set for rehab assignment Sheffield (forearm) is set to appear in his first rehab outing Sunday with High-A Everett, Jen Mueller of Root Sports Northwest reports.
Impact Sheffield threw a bullpen session Wednesday. All seems to have gone well, as he's now set to begin a rehab assignment. Because he's been out since July 7, Sheffield is likely to need several outings to ramp back up but a return in the middle or later portion of the month remains realistic.
AUGUST 5, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Important progress being made Sheffield (forearm) threw off a mound Sunday and is set for a full bullpen session Wednesday, the Associated Press reports.
Impact The left-hander is apparently picking up some steam in his recovery, having made some solid strides since starting a throwing regimen July 16. However, despite the encouraging progress, Sheffield is still likely looking at no earlier than a mid-August return date when factoring in the likely need for multiple rehab appearances.
JULY 27, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Set for mound work Sheffield (forearm) is scheduled to throw off a mound Sunday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Impact This is a significant step towards a return for Sheffield, as he has been limited to throwing off flat ground to this point. Even so, there's still no clear timeline for his return, though an early-to-mid August activation remains a possibility if he doesn't suffer any setbacks.
JULY 22, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Resumes throwng Manager Scott Servais said that Sheffield (forearm) resumed throwing Friday, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports.
Impact Sheffield has been on the injured list since July 8 with a left forearm strain. Servais previously said that the left-hander would be out well past the minimum 10 days, but Friday's update represents an important first step in his recovery. A clearer timeline will emerge when Sheffield is able to throw off a mound, but for the time being, an early-to-mid-August activation from the injured list appears to be within the realm of possibility.
JULY 17, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Could be facing extended absence Manager Scott Servais said Friday that Sheffield (forearm) won't "pitch anytime in the near future," Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
Impact Sheffield landed on the 10-day IL on Wednesday with a left forearm strain. The skipper went on to say that he will likely take a while to build his arm back up once he's feeling healthy. With that in mind, the southpaw is almost certain to be out of the starting rotation for the rest of July and possibly longer.

Impact Sheffield was knocked around by the Yankees for six runs in just 1.2 innings Tuesday and hit the injured list the next day. It's still unclear exactly when the Mariners expect him to return, but he's not in contention for any of the first five games after the break.

Goes to IL The Mariners placed Sheffield on the 10-day injured list with a left forearm strain Wednesday, Corey Brock of The Athletic reports.
Impact Sheffield likely suffered the injury during Tuesday's brutal outing against the Yankees, when he was tagged for six runs in 1.2 innings. It's unclear whether the lefty will be activated when eligible after the All-Star break. Erik Swanson was activated from the IL in a corresponding move.
JULY 8, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Lit up for six runs Sheffield (5-8) took the loss Tuesday against the Yankees after allowing six runs on five hits and three walks while striking out two over 1.2 innings.
Impact Sheffield was pounced on early and often in what was his worst outing of the year. Giancarlo Stanton started off by taking him deep to left in the first for a three-run blast and the Yankees were able to pile on three more in the second thanks to the erratic pitching of Sheffield. The 25-year-old lefty has faced a bit of a rough patch over the last month, surrendering at least four earned runs in four of his last five starts. Tuesday was also the third time this season he's finished with more walks than strikeouts. Sheffield now owns a 6.48 ERA, 1.78 WHIP and 59:35 K:BB over 73.2 innings. He lines up for a home matchup against the Angels to end the week.

Impact Things went south quickly for the southpaw after a scoreless first inning, but fortunately for Sheffield, Toronto pitchers weren't seeing any more success than he did. He tossed only 53 of 95 pitches for strikes before exiting, and he'll carry a 5.88 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and 57:32 K:BB through 72 innings into his next outing.

Sheffield scheduled to start for Mariners at Blue Jays

JUNE 30, 2021 • Associated Press
Takes seventh loss Sheffield (5-7) allowed three earned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five across 4.1 innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Rockies.
Impact Sheffield struggled to work efficiently, as he needed 87 pitches to record only 13 outs. He was hurt by walks and the long ball, as he handed out multiple free passes for the sixth time in his last seven starts and also served up a two-run homer to Brendan Rodgers. Across his last three outings, Sheffield has surrendered 14 earned runs across only 13.1 frames. For the season, he now has a 5.69 ERA with a 54:29 K:BB across 68 innings.

Impact Sheffield had a rough outing and gave up a season-high seven runs, but that's not where the problems end for the left-hander -- he's also allowed two homers in three straight appearances. The southpaw owns a 7.36 ERA in three June starts and will try to bounce back in his next turn on the mound, scheduled for next week against the Rockies at home.

Takes loss Sheffield (5-5) allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out three across four innings to take the loss Thursday against the Tigers.
Impact Sheffield ran into trouble early in his start, as he surrendered two home runs and three earned runs across his first two innings of work. He settled in from there -- two errors allowed the other two runs to cross the plate in the fourth inning -- but was limited to a short outing due to an inflated pitch count. Though he hasn't worked particularly deep into games, this marked Sheffield's first start of the season in which he hasn't completed at least five innings. Through 11 outings, Sheffield has maintained a 4.91 ERA with a 45:24 K:BB across 58.2 frames.
