INJURIES

Solid in no-decision Tuesday Gant didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 4-2 win over the Marlins, allowing one unearned run on four hits and three walks over four innings. He struck out four.
Impact A couple of Tyler O'Neill errors in the first inning tagged Gant with the unearned run, but the right-hander otherwise held Miami in check over 82 pitches (48 strikes). Gant will look to improve his efficiency and last deeper into his next outing, set for Monday at home against the Nationals.

Officially secures rotation spot Gant will serve as the Cardinals' fifth starter to begin the regular season, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Impact Gant was seen as a favorite to claim a rotation spot late in spring training, and manager Mike Shildt confirmed Saturday that the right-hander will begin the year as the team's fifth starter. Gant made four appearances (three starts) this spring and posted a 4.40 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 14.1 innings.
MARCH 27, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Virtual lock for rotation Gant has all but secured a spot in the starting rotation to open the season according to manager Mike Shildt, Zachary Silver of MLB.com reports.
Impact The right-hander's 4.40 ERA across four Grapefruit League starts isn't stellar, but Gant has allowed two earned runs or less in three of his turns and is coming off an impressive five-inning outing against the Astros on Saturday. The Cardinals have the potential for up to two openings in the starting rotation to start the season, but Shildt's remarks seem to indicate that Gant would be the favorite for the confirmed vacancy that Miles Mikolas' shoulder injury has created for at least the first week of the campaign.
MARCH 25, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Impresses in latest start Gant allowed an earned run on three hits and two walks over five innings in a Grapefruit League win over the Astros on Saturday. He struck out five.
Impact Zachary Silver of MLB.com reports Gant worked up to 77 pitches during the outing, which included three strikeouts of Jose Altuve. Following a rough start in which he surrendered four earned runs across 2.2 innings to the Nationals on March 5, Gant has bounced back to yield just three earned runs and post an 8:2 K:BB across the 9.2 innings covering his subsequent pair of spring starts.
MARCH 22, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Impressive in latest start Gant allowed two earned runs on four hits and two walks over 4.2 innings in a Grapefruit League win over the Nationals on Monday. He struck out three.
Impact The right-hander worked up to 79 pitches, the most any Cardinals hurler has thrown this spring. Zachary Silver of MLB.com reports Gant's candidacy for a spot in the starting rotation was boosted by this solid outing, in which he made just one costly error -- a two-run homer off the bat of Ryan Zimmerman.

Bounces back in 'B' game start Gant was solid over a four-inning start against the Nationals in a "B" game on Wednesday, Zachary Silver of MLB.com reports.
Impact The right-hander's chances of making the starting rotation to open the season presumably went up a good bit with the news that Alex Reyes has been removed from consideration and will instead operate exclusively in a bullpen role this season, and that Miles Mikolas (shoulder) is unlikely to be ready for Opening Day. Gant helped his own cause with a resurgent effort Wednesday after giving up four runs over two innings to Washington's full squad on Friday.

Struggles in first spring start Gant, competing for the No. 5 role in the starting rotation, allowed four runs on four hits and two walks over two innings in a Grapefruit League loss to the Nationals on Friday. H...
Impact Gant had opened Grapefruit League play with a pair of scoreless frames versus the Nationals on Sunday, but his second go-around against Washington clearly didn't go anywhere near as smoothly. The right-hander saw his first inning rolled over per spring training rules after he allowed a three-run home run to Alex Avila, a development that led to Gant settling down to subsequently record five straight outs before giving up an RBI double on his final pitch. Zachary Silver of MLB.com reports Gant primarily placed the blame for his struggles on not having anything other than his fastball working Friday. "Definitely room for improvement," Gant said. "I was very non-competitive with my offspeed pitches today. I felt like I had a pretty good heater, but it takes more than a pretty good heater to get it done. Almost every offspeed pitch I threw was pretty noncompetitive, either bouncing or a foot outside on those curveballs."

Strong early case for rotation spot Gant, who is competing for the one vacancy in the Cardinals' starting rotation, made a strong first impression in his bid by firing a pair of scoreless innings in Sunday's Grapefru...
Impact The veteran right-hander didn't allow a hit and offset a pair of walks with three strikeouts across his 34-pitch outing. Carlos Martinez, who naturally has a robust career body of work as a starter, and the promising Alex Reyes are considered the other leading candidates for the No. 5 starter role, with the latter also turning in a strong one-inning effort Sunday.

Avoids arbitration Gant signed a one-year, $2.1 million contract with the Cardinals on Thursday, avoiding arbitration, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
Impact Rather than going to arbitration, Gant and the Cardinals were able to reach an agreement on a one-year deal for 2021. The right-hander dealt with right groin tightness late in the season, but he should be fully healthy in time for spring training. Gant made 17 relief appearances during the abbreviated 2020 season and posted a career-best 2.40 ERA and 1.07 WHIP over 15 innings.

Placed on injured list Gant (groin) was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday.
Impact Gant left the first game of Friday's doubleheader with right groin tightness, and he'll land on the injured list prior to Game 2. Nabil Crismatt was recalled in a corresponding move to provide bullpen depth. It's unclear whether Gant could return if the Cardinals make a run in the postseason.

Dealing with right groin tightness Gant was diagnosed with right groin tightness after leaving Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader against the Brewers, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Impact Gant returned from a groin issue Sunday after missing a week due to the injury, and it appears as though the issue has flared up again. It's unclear how much time the right-hander could miss as a result.

Exits with apparent injury Gant exited Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader against the Brewers with an apparent injury, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
Impact Gant gave up a leadoff single in the top of the sixth inning Friday before leaving the game with a trainer. He dealt with a groin injury recently, although it's unclear whether his issue Friday is related.
SEPTEMBER 25, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Notches seventh hold in return Gant (groin) was credited with his seventh hold in a win over the Pirates on Sunday, firing a clean eighth inning.
Impact The veteran right-hander fired nine of his 13 pitches for strikes in his first taste of game action in a week, as Gant received several days off to rest a groin strain. The decision not to put Gant on the injured list ultimately appears to have paid off based on Sunday's performance, and the 28-year-old should be available in his usual capacity for the critical final week of the regular season.
SEPTEMBER 21, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Plays catch Thursday Gant (groin) played catch Thursday, the Associated Press reports.
Impact It's another step for the right-hander, who also did some running and threw a bullpen session Tuesday. The Cardinals are opting to allow Gant to try to work his way through his current groin discomfort by holding him out of game action for several days.
SEPTEMBER 18, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Could pitch Wednesday Gant (groin) did some running and threw a bullpen session off flat ground Tuesday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
Impact Gant was forced out of his relief appearance Sunday against the Cubs due to right groin discomfort, but he looks on track to avoid a trip to the 10-day injured list. The Cardinals will presumably re-evaluate Gant on Wednesday, and if his groin checks out fine, he could be available for either contest of the team's doubleheader in Milwaukee.
SEPTEMBER 16, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Quick return the goal Gant, who exited Sunday's game with right groin discomfort, is hoping multiple days of rest will resolve his issue, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
Impact The right-hander dealt with similar soreness earlier in the season, and three days of rest did the trick for him on that occasion. Manager Mike Shildt noted Monday he was hoping for the same outcome in this instance, relaying to reporters that Gant was receiving treatment and would be evaluated again shortly thereafter.

Exits with right groin discomfort Gant left Sunday's game against the Reds with right groin discomfort, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
Impact Gant only threw five pitches in relief Sunday before leaving the game with trainers as a result of his injury. Manager Mike Shildt said after the game that he's hopeful that Gant's injury is minor and that he could return after 1-to-3 days, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Impact The veteran right-hander bounced back from having allowed an earned run over an inning against the Twins in his prior outing Tuesday, producing his fourth scoreless effort in his last five appearances. Outside of a couple of stumbles, Gant has been one of manager Mike Shildt's most trusted bullpen assets, posting a 1.00 WHIP and career-best figures in swinging strike rate (13.8 percent) and strikeout rate (32.1 percent) across 14 innings (14 appearances).

Impact Gant came into the game to start the eighth inning with the game tied 1-1. With regulation being just seven innings, a runner was placed on second to start the frame. He struck out Erik Gonzalez for the first out, but gave up a run-scoring single to Cole Tucker a batter later. The Pirates plated two more, but one of the runs was unearned due to Brad Miller's second error on the day. Gant was charged with the loss, although it must be noted that a runner starting the frame on second and Miller's miscue had a huge impact on the inning.

Impact Gant has allowed just one hit and issued one walk during that span while recording seven strikeouts, making him one of Mike Shildt's most effective bullpen options early. Gant has been a study in efficiency as well, registering 15 total outs on the season on just 59 pitches. The right-hander's arm is certainly built up for plenty of work akin to what he's logged thus far, considering he covered 66.1 innings over a career-high 64 appearances in 2019.
