Astros pitcher AJ Blubaugh to make debut against Detroit, Abreu placed on paternity list

Houston Astros pitching prospect AJ Blubaugh will make his major league debut against the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday afternoon
APRIL 30 • Associated Press
Won't start this week Wesneski isn't expected to make his next start until the Astros' three-game series in Milwaukee early next week, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Impact Manager Joe Espada relayed Tuesday that Wesneski isn't dealing with an injury, but the Astros are eager to build in some extra rest for the right-hander after he lacked his usual efficiency in his most recent start Friday, when he recorded a season-low one strikeout and threw 51 of his 80 pitches for strikes in a 2-0 loss to the Royals. With Wesneski not scheduled to pitch this week, the Astros called up AJ Blubaugh from Triple-A Sugar Land to start Wednesday against the Tigers, and a sixth starter will be added to the mix against the White Sox on Sunday, when Lance McCullers (forearm) is scheduled to come off the 15-day injured list to make his 2025 debut with Houston.

Getting extra rest Manager Joe Espada said Tuesday that Wesneski is healthy but won't make his scheduled turn through the rotation Wednesday against the Tigers in order to get him some extra rest, ro...
Impact The right-hander labored in his last start Friday versus the Royals, as he issued three walks after handing out just one in his first four starts of the year. Wesneski has worked as a swingman in the majors prior to this year with 22 starts in 68 appearances, so it's not a huge surprise he'll require some extra rest here and there. The Astros haven't announced who will start instead Wednesday, but A.J. Blubaugh is a likely candidate and is on the taxi squad, per Rome. Wesneski now appears poised to take the mound Friday on the road versus the White Sox.

Saddled with second loss Wesneski (1-2) took the loss Friday against the Royals after surrendering two earned runs on eight hits and zero walks while striking out one batter over five-plus innings.
Impact Wesneski had 25 punchouts across 23 innings entering Friday's contest, but his third-inning strikeout of Jonathan India was the only one he was able to draw in five frames against Kansas City. Despite allowing consistent traffic on the bases, Wesneski didn't surrender a run until Kyle Isbel brought Drew Waters home on a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning. The right-hander then came back out for the sixth but was pulled after allowing hits to the first two batters he faced, one of which eventually came around to score. Houston's offense, on the other hand, wasn't able to get anything going against Seth Lugo, so Wesneski will take a 1-2 record as well as a 3.86 ERA into his next start at home against Detroit.

Takes no-decision versus San Diego Wesneski gave up two runs on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk over five innings during Saturday's 3-2 win against the Padres. He did not factor in the decision.
Impact The right-hander exited in line for the loss, but the Astros offense came alive in the sixth and seventh innings to flip the script. Wesneski has allowed three or fewer runs in his first four starts of the season, though the six long balls he's surrendered is a worrying trend. He'll take a 3.91 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 25:4 K:BB into a matchup with the Royals next weekend.

Strikes out 10 in win Wesneski (1-1) allowed three runs on five hits over six innings Sunday, striking out 10 and earning a win over the Angels.
Impact Wesneski picked up his first win as an Astro in a fairly unconventional way. He coughed up three solo home runs and generated only 11 swinging strikes despite the 10 punchouts. It was also his second straight quality start after taking a loss in his season debut. Wesneski is sporting a 4.00 ERA with a 21:3 K:BB through 18 innings. He's currently scheduled to face the Padres at home next weekend.

Tosses seven strong innings Wesneski didn't factor into the decision Monday against Seattle after allowing two runs on three hits and no walks in seven innings, striking out five.
Impact Wesneski was excellent Monday, tossing four scoreless innings to open the game before Ryan Bliss tagged him for a two-run homer in the fifth inning. The right-hander then threw two more clean frames thereafter to cap off a strong outing. Although Wesneski has a 3.75 ERA through two starts this year, he holds a 0.67 WHIP and 11:3 K:BB over 12.0 innings and should carry plenty of streaming appeal at home against the Angels in his next projected start this weekend.

Hurt by loud contact in loss Wesneski (0-1) took the loss after giving up three runs on two hits and three walks in five innings Tuesday against the Giants. He struck out six.
Impact Although he allowed only two hits Tuesday and was able to throw two scoreless innings to open the game, Wesneski yielded two walks to begin the third frame and saw Willy Adames drive them in via a two-run double. Heliot Ramos then belted a leadoff homer to start the fourth inning. The 27-year-old right-hander will look to lower the amount of loud contact in his next scheduled start, which is tentatively set for early next week in Seattle.
