Good thing several Cardinals are set to return from injury because shortstop Aledmys Diaz, an All-Star in his rookie season, will be out for a while.

Diaz suffered a hairline fracture in his right thumb when he was hit by a pitch Sunday in Miami, and general manager John Mozeliak told reporters in Cincinnati that Diaz will not only be placed on the disabled list, but likely will miss more than the minimum 15 days.

Jhonny Peralta (thumb) is expected to be activated Tuesday and likely will play shortstop, his position entering the season but one he vacated while on the DL because of Diaz’s strong play.

First baseman/outfielder Brandon Moss (ankle) also is expected to be activated Tuesday.
