ST. LOUIS — Right-handed pitching prospect Angel Rondon is joining the Cardinals’ 40-man roster.

The club announced Thursday night that it has selected Rondon’s contract, one night ahead of the deadline for protect prospects from next month’s Rule 5 Draft by adding them to the 40-man roster.

Rondon, 22, is ranked as the No. 13 prospect in the Cardinals’ system by MLB Pipeline. He has a 3.01 ERA with 341 strikeouts and 119 walks over 347 1/3 professional innings spanning four seasons. He didn’t pitch competitively in 2020, but he worked out at the Cardinals’ alternate site in Springfield, Mo. for the duration of the pandemic-shortened season.
