The St. Louis Cardinals started adjusting their roster in the wake of a rash of positive COVID-19 tests over the last few days and activated utilityman Brad Miller.

The Cardinals placed catcher Yadier Molina, infielders Paul DeJong and Edmundo Sosa and pitchers Carlos Martínez, Junior Fernández and Kodi Whitley on the injured list. All but Martínez were identified earlier Tuesday as having tested positive for the illness and consenting to the release of that information.

Miller, 30, an offseason free agent acquisition who can play almost any position, was activated after opening the season on the 10-day IL with right ankle bursitis.

The team expects to make more roster moves upon getting clearance from Major League Baseball to resume play Friday.

The Cardinals also adjusted their coaching staff. Minor league hitting coordinator Russ Steinhorn will transfer from the alternate training site in Springfield to the big league staff. Assistant minor league hitting coordinator Joey Hawkins will be added to the alternate training site coaching staff once his in-take testing is complete. In the meantime, Emily Wiebe, the Cardinals’ manager of player development and performance, will assist in Springfield.
