Blues' Pietrangelo wins All-Star passing challenge

Blues defenseman Alex Pietrangelo emerged victorious in Saturday night's passing challenge, one of six events that comprised the annual All-Star Skills Competition.

Alex Pietrangelo quickly found a way to make his first All-Star Weekend a memorable one.

The St. Louis Blues defenseman, who will represent the Central Division in Sunday's NHL All-Star Game, emerged victorious in Saturday night's passing challenge -- one of six events that comprised the annual All-Star Skills Competition.

Each player in the competition had to successfully complete four passes through light-up targets, four through a course in the neutral zone, four into mini nets and then one into the game net. Pietrangelo completed the course in 0:46.610, beating runner-up Eric Staal of the Minnesota Wild by more than eight seconds. Blues center Brayden Schenn finished fifth among the competition's nine participants, recording a time of 1:05.951.

As the winner of the passing challenge, Pietrangelo earned $25,000. The Athletic's Jeremy Rutherford tweeted that the veteran defenseman will donate the prize money to charity.

The 28-year-old Pietrangelo was selected as an NHL All-Star Game participant for the first time earlier this month. He has eight goals and 27 assists in 47 games this season.
