ST. LOUIS — Pack your bags, Joey Butler. You’ve got a long journey ahead.

The Cardinals announced Friday afternoon that Butler’s contract has been purchased by the Orix Buffaloes of the Nippon Professional Baseball League in Japan. St. Louis had requested outright release waivers for the Triple-A outfielder.

Butler appeared in five games with the Cardinals following his purchase from Memphis on May 9. The right-handed slugger was batting .360 with four homers and 21 RBI in 31 games in Triple A.

He is set to join an Orix team that features former Cardinals pitcher Brandon Dickson and currently leads the NPB Pacific League with a 29-16 record.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
