CHASING THE LEADERS

After dropping the series opener to the Cubs on Thursday night, the Cardinals have three more games this weekend against the NL Central leaders at Wrigley Field. The games Friday and Saturday afternoon are on FOX Sports Midwest.

HOLLIDAY HURT        

The Cardinals will be without left fielder Matt Holliday this weekend — and for some time beyond — after he fractured his thumb when hit by a pitch Thursday.

GOLD RUSH CONTINUES

U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps already has four gold medals in the Rio Olympics and will pursue a fifth Friday in the 100-meter butterfly. If he wins, that will increase his career Olympic record total to 23. Meanwhile, Katie Ledecky will pursue gold in the 800-meter freestyle. She hopes to sweep the 200-, 400- and 800-meter freestyles. And the U.S. women’s soccer team has a quarterfinal matchup with Sweden and the U.S. men’s basketball team plays Serbia.

Vijay Singh sat atop the leaderboard after the first round of the U.S. Senior Open at Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio. The tournament continues through Sunday.
