Trainer Richard Hannon said the 4-year-old horse has a leg injury and it was decided to end his career rather than risk further problems. He is set to stand at Coolmore Stud in Ireland.
Hannon said Thursday: "It’s a terrible shame; it’s heartbreaking. But I don’t want to see him end up with a bad injury.”
Canford Cliffs lost by five lengths to Frankel in the highly anticipated Sussex Stakes at Goodwood on July 27. Canford Cliffs had won his five previous Group 1 races, including a stunning victory over the great mare Goldikova in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.
"He is, without doubt, the best horse I have had in over 40 years as a trainer,” Hannon said.
