Breeders’ Cup to feature 2-year-olds on 1st day of racing
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) The Breeders’ Cup will feature five races for 2-year-olds on the first day of the world championships, with the Distaff and Dirt Mile moving to the second day as part of nine races beginning this fall at Churchill Downs.
The first day will be billed as ”Future Stars Friday.” The $2 million Juvenile Fillies and the new $1 million Juvenile Turf Sprint will join the $1 million Juvenile Fillies Turf and $1 million Juvenile Turf on Friday’s card, which will culminate with the $2 million Juvenile. That race, whose winner is tabbed as the early Kentucky Derby favorite, had been run on Saturday in previous years.
The $6 million Classic will cap Saturday’s program.
In addition to the lineup changes, the Filly & Mare Turf will be run at 1 3/8 miles instead of 1 1/8 miles, the Juvenile Turf Sprint will be contested at 5 furlongs as will the Turf Sprint.
The two-day world championships worth over $30 million will be run Nov. 2 and 3.
