Nicklaus plays down expectations for McIlroy

American golf great Jack Nicklaus believes it’s too early to describe Rory McIlroy as the sport’s next superstar.

The 22-year-old McIlroy swept to his first major title by winning the U.S. Open by eight shots last month, leading many to predict a new era of dominance from the Northern Irishman.

Nicklaus, the record 18-time major winner, expects McIlroy ”will add a lot of majors” but says ”don’t anoint him as the crown prince yet.”

Nicklaus feels there is a lot more to come from Tiger Woods, who will miss next week’s British Open because of injury and hasn’t won a tournament since 2009.

The 71-year-old Nicklaus told the BBC on Sunday that Woods is ”a very determined and talented young man … I think you’ll see a lot from Tiger.”
