TROON, Scotland (AP) A look at the first round Thursday in the British Open at Royal Troon Golf Club (all times EDT):

LEADING: Phil Mickelson had a 16-foot birdie lip out on the final hole, giving him an 8-under 73. That tied a major championship record.

TRAILING: Martin Kaymer and Patrick Reed were at 66.

LEFTY'S MARK: Mickelson became the 26th player to record a 63 in a major championship, and the ninth player at the British Open.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING: Of the seven previous players to open with a 63 in a major championship, only Jack Nicklaus (1980 U.S. Open) and Raymond Floyd (1982 PGA Championship) went on to win.

NOT SO FAB FOUR: The top four players in the world were a combined even par. Rory McIlroy shot 69, Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson shot 71 and Jason Day had 73.

SHOT OF THE DAY: Louis Oosthuizen had a hole-in-one on the 14th hole.

KEY STATISTIC: Americans have won the last six times the British Open was at Royal Troon. Of the top 11 players on the leaderboard Thursday, eight were Americans.

NOTEWORTHY: Fifty players broke par in the opening round.
