Rays’ McGee takes a step forward in recovery from elbow surgery

Tampa Bay Rays reliever Jake McGee took a step forward in his recovery from arthroscopic elbow surgery Monday.

McGee played catch for the first time since the Dec. 12 procedure to remove a loose body in his left elbow. The development took place at Tropicana Field. He’s expected to begin the season on the disabled list, but McGee has targeted a possible mid-April return.

McGee, who will enter his sixth season with the Rays, posted a 1.89 ERA with 90 strikeouts, 19 saves and 14 holds in 73 appearances last year.
