Rays claim left-handed reliever Pedro Figueroa from A’s

Left-handed reliever Pedro Figueroa posted a 4.38 ERA in 24 appearances with the A's in 2013. The Rays claimed him on Tuesday.

The Tampa Bay Rays have added another arm to strengthen their bullpen.

On Tuesday, the Rays announced that they claimed reliever Pedro Figueroa off waivers from the Oakland Athletics. The left-hander has appeared in 24 major-league games in two seasons, posting a 4.38 ERA in 24 2/3 innings.

Shot at spring training

Figueroa, 28, saw most of his big-league action in the 2012 season when he appeared in 21 2/3 innings and had a 3.32 ERA with 14 strikeouts.

He spent most of the past two years with Triple-A Sacramento. This past season he went 3-4 with a 4.10 ERA in 59 1/3 innings. He was 0-2 with a 2.62 ERA in 44 2/3 innings with Sacramento in 2012.

Outfielder Jerry Sands was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.
