Ray Allen event raises nearly $500K for diabetes research

Ray Allen and his wife, Shannon, helped raise nearly $500,000 for diabetes research through a golf tournament, luncheon and dinner event on Monday in Miami Beach.

The Ray Allen Golf Classic and Luncheon raised $500,000 for diabetes research on Monday.

The Miami Heat guard has been active in raising funds since his son, Allen, was diagnosed with Type I diabetes as a toddler.

A number of Heat players past and present played golf at La Gorce Country Club in Miami Beach, including Chris Bosh, Rashard Lewis and Alonzo Mourning. A luncheon also featured LeBron James, Chris Anderson, Roger Mason and a number of Heat wives and girlfriends, including Shannon Allen, Gabrielle Union, Destiny Jones, Faith Haslem, Jenine Howard and Chris Riley in attendance.

Swiss watchmaker Hublot auctioned off three special edition Allen watches for $191,000.

”We are elated that our inaugural Ray Allen Golf Classic and Ray of Hope Ladies Luncheon, our first event in Miami, was such an enormous success,” Shannon Allen said. ”The support that we received from our presenting sponsor and partner, Hublot, exceeded every expectation. Grateful, thankful, honored.”
