International Champions Cup profile: Chelsea

On August 6 and 7, eight prestigious clubs from across Europe

and the United States will call South Florida home for two days as they

compete for the coveted International Champions Cup Trophy. In the fifth of an eight-part series, we take a look at Chelsea.

Founded in 1905, the English Club Chelsea has won four Premier League titles, seven FA Cup titles, and one UEFA Champions League Title.  The team has found great success as of late; winning three of their Premier League titles is the last 10 years, winning the UEFA Champions League in 2012, and the UEFA Europa League in 2012-2013.

After winning the UEFA Europa League this past year, Chelsea became one of four teams to have won all three of the major UEFA club titles, including Juventus, Ajax, and Bayern Munich.

Chelsea is led by Englishmen John Terry and Frank Lampard, who serve as captain and vice-captain of the team.  Both men also play for the English National team, with whom they participated in the 2006 and 2010 World Cups.

Terry, a defender, has been with Chelsea since 1998, and Lampard, a midfielder, joined the team in 2001. They have both been crucial to the success of Chelsea in the past decade.

Other key members of the squad include Brazilian National team members Oscar and David Luiz.

In an interview with The Green Soccer Journal earlier this summer, Oscar was quoted saying that he believes Chelsea “can win many titles next season,” showing that the young midfield is entering the 2013 International Champions Cup with confidence.

Chelsea newly appointed manager José Mourinho has recently started his second stint with club.  Mourinho previously coached Chelsea from 2004-2007.

Mourinho will face his old team Inter Milan in the first round of the International Champions Cup in a game that will be played at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, IN.  José Mourinho led Inter to the UEFA Champions league title in 2010.

There is also a possibility that Mourinho can face another former team, Real Madrid, in the final round of the International Champions Cup at Sun Life Stadium.

As mentioned, Chelsea will begin their International Champions Cup play in Indianapolis against Inter Milan, before heading to New York’s MetLife Stadium for the second round, where they may face AC Milan or Valencia.
