QB Kevin Olsen headlines depth chart for ‘Canes spring game
University of Miami head coach Al Golden released a depth chart Monday night with just three practices remaining before Saturday’s spring game at Sun Life Stadium.
Redshirt freshman Kevin Olsen takes over first-team quarterback duties with senior Ryan Williams out with an ACL injury he sustained this past weekend.
Just three offensive starters from last year’s opener against Florida Atlantic will participate — junior offensive tackle Ereck Flowers, senior offensive guard Jon Feliciano and senior wideout Phillip Dorsett.
Sophomore Standish Dobard is listed first ahead of seniors Beau Sandland and Clive Walford at tight end. Walford caught 34 passes, second most on the team, in 2013. Sophomore Walter Tucker is listed as the starting fullback and back-up running back.
On defense, seven of the 11 positions have co- or tri-starters listed, including all four lineman and two linebacker positions.
Newly converted safety Dallas Crawford, last year’s second-leading scorer, is listed as a starter with junior Deon Bush.
The competition continues at punter between junior Matt Goudis and redshirt senior Ricky Carroll. Sophomores Stacy Coley and Artie Burns will be the kick returners.
Eight injured players — freshman receiver Braxton Berrios, junior defensive back Rayshawn Jenkins, junior running back Duke Johnson, redshirt freshman offensive lineman Hunter Knighton, sophomore tight end Jake O’Donnell, freshman running back Joseph Yearby and Williams — will not take part in the spring game.
Saturday’s schedule and scoring system will be as follows: The first 10 minutes will be 1-on-1 competitions (1 point per play). The next 15 minutes will be 7-on-7 and the final 95 minutes will be scrimmage.
Aside from the usual offensive scoring, first downs will be worth one offensive point. The defense gets a point for a stop, two for a fourth-down stop, three for a three-and-out, six for a turnover and 10 for a defensive touchdown.
