With just three days remaining in the regular season, we’re going to do things a bit differently this week. Instead of a paragraph each on a small number of guys, we’ll give you a brief look at a handful of widely available players at each position – a smorgasbord of fantasy free agents, if you will – with their FOXSports.com ownership percentages. Good luck with the culmination of your title chase! (Note: All stats are through Wednesday’s games.)
Washington’s Wilson Ramos (37.3 percent owned) has 15 homers in 280 at bats, and plays just about every day … Philly’s Carlos Ruiz (20.7 percent owned) has decent power, and a better BA than mst regular catchers … 2014 sleeper Yan Gomes (12.9 percent owned) has C/1B/3B eligibility, and is getting everyday duty in Cleveland. He’s batting .289 with 10 homers … The Twins are giving rookie Josmil Pinto (3.1 percent owned) regular playing time in Joe Mauer’s absence. Pinto batted .308 with 14 homers and an .893 OPS at Double A this season … Mariners’ prospect Mike Zunino (0.6 percent owned) finally flashed some power with two homers on Wednesday.
With Allen Craig seemingly done for the regular season, Matt Adams (17.7 percent owned) is holding down the fort for the Cardinals. Five homers in the last two weeks and 17 overall make for a pretty good fort … For the last time, PICK UP BRANDON BELT (16.6 percent owned)! He’s batting .286 with 16 homers and 74 runs scored … Sweet-swinging Marlins’ rookie Christian Yelich (9.7 percent owned) has really picked it up lately, batting .318 in September with a couple of homers, six stolen bases and 15 runs scored. He’s got 1B/OF eligibility … You guys all know that Darin Ruf (5.7 percent owned) has 14 homers and an .839 OPS in 240 at bats for the Phillies, with 1B/OF eligibility. Right? Right?… Tommy Medica (0.1 percent owned) has first base all to himself for the Padres. He’s got 21 homers between Triple A and the majors this season.
Remember when Jedd Gyorko (26.4 percent owned) looked like a bust after getting lots of preseason hype? He’s slugged 13 homers since the beginning of August, raising his total to 21 for the season, and has 2B/3B eligibility … We’ve mentioned Royals 2B Emilio Bonifacio (13.1 percent owned) before, but it’s worth noting again that he has 15 stolen bases in 40 games since being traded from the Blue Jays … Mariners rookie Nick Franklin (6 percent owned) has started to heat up recently, with nine hits in his last seven games. Franklin, who has 2B/SS eligibility, has 12 homers with six stolen bases in 99 games … Brewers rookie Scooter Gennett (5 percent owned) has been pretty good, batting .328 with six home runs in 65 games. He’s speedy enough to sneak in a stolen base this weekend, too … Speaking of speedy, Cesar Hernandez (1.3 percent owned) has assumed everyday duty in center field for the Phillies, but he’s more valuable with his 2B eligibility. Hernandez stole 33 bases in the minors this season.
This might be a reach, but Chase Headley is available in 43 percent of FOXSports.com leagues. You should check to see if you can get him … Houston’s Matt Dominguez (11.1 percent owned) has 21 homers and 76 RBI this season, and for fantasy purposes I don’t care that his OBP is under .300 … It’s hard to get too excited about Oakland’s Alberto Callaspo (5.9 percent owned), but he has two homers over the past week, has 2B/3B eligibility and plays all the time … Milwaukee’s Jeff Bianchi (0.8 percent owned) isn’t much of a hitter, but he figures to play in Aramis Ramirez’s place over the season’s final few days, has some speed, and might score or knock in a run for NL-only leaguers … Rookie Marcus Semien (0.2 percent owned) has been playing every day for the White Sox. Semien has SS/3B eligibility, and hit 19 homers with 24 stolen bases in the minors this season.
Minnesota’s Brian Dozier (38.6 percent owned, SS/2B eligibility) has been one of 2013’s pleasant fantasy surprises, with 18 home runs and 14 stolen bases … Zack Cozart (20 percent owned) has 12 home runs, 63 RBI and 74 runs. As we asked here last week, why is he so much less popular than Andrelton Simmons in fantasy circles? … Even though he’s been slumping a bit lately, I love the blazing speed of Astros’ rookie Jonathan Villar (6.1 percent owned). With 17 steals in 55 games, he’ll be an interesting SB option in 2014 drafts … Versatility, thy name is Ed Lucas (5.7 percent owned). The Marlins’ jack-of-all-trades has 1B/2B/3B/SS eligibility, and has nine homers between Triple A and the majors this season … Eduardo Nunez (0.8 percent owned) has been getting regular duty at third base for the Yankees, as Alex Rodriguez has settled in the DH role. Nunez might be terrible defensively, but he can hit a bit and has decent speed. Nunez has two homers over the past week.
Will Venable (21.7 percent owned) returned to the Padres’ lineup on Wednesday after missing some time due to an abdominal strain. Venable has 22 homers with 22 steals this season, making him one of just eight 20-20 men in the majors. The other seven are all owned in at least 80 percent of leagues … Unfortunately, Charlie Blackmon (11 percent owned) is leaving the friendly confines of Coors Field for a weekend at Chavez Ravine. Still, he’s batting .312 with six homers and seven stolen bases in 79 games, and has 23 hits in his last 49 at bats. Who else wants to gamble on three more days of Blackmon domination? … Injuries derailed a possible breakout season for D-backs OF Adam Eaton (8.2 percent owned), but he’s got three homers, five steals and 39 runs scored in 63 games. That’s pretty good … Eric Young is third in the majors with 42 stolen bases, and is owned in just 7.8 percent of FOXSports.com leagues. How is that possible? … Chris Parmelee (0.3 percent owned) has 1B/OF eligibility, and has been the Twins’ regular first baseman this month. Parmelee hasn’t hit a home run in awhile, but he’s batting .295 in September. He SOOOOO due!
First, keep an eye on the FOXSports.com Fantasy Buzz Blog for streaming starter suggestions … Detroit’s improving Rick Porcello (28.7 percent owned) has a Friday road date with the punchless Marlins … Astros’ crafty lefty Brett Oberholtzer (2.8 percent owned) has a 2.00 ERA (!!!) over nine big-league starts, and faces the Yankees Friday night … San Francisco’s Yusemiro Petit (21.7 percent owned) has a 2.77 ERA with 38 strikeouts against 11 walks in 39 innings over six starts, and gets the Padres at home on Saturday … Miami’s fireballing Nate Eovaldi (1 percent owned) has picked up the strikeout pace lately, and gets a Saturday home start against a Tiger squad that has incentive to rest its regulars … Jose Quintana has a 3.45 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP and 160 strikeouts, and he’s STILL owned in just 20 percent of leagues? Grab him for Sunday’s finale against the Royals … San Diego’s Tyson Ross (6.3 percent owned) has been terrific lately, and can be grabbed for Sunday’s game at San Francisco … A’s rookie Sonny Gray (25 percent owned) has a 2.90 ERA with a 1.10 WHIP and 59 strikeouts in 59 innings, and pitches at Seattle on Sunday.
Milwaukee’s Jim Henderson (38.2 percent owned) is still flying a bit under the radar for some reason, despite having 26 saves … The FOX fantasy community has been slow to embrace Danny Farquhar (13.3 percent owned), who has 15 saves since grabbing the Mariners’ closer role in early August. Farquhar has a ridiculous 77 strikeouts in 54 2/3 innings … Submarining Brad Ziegler (7.3 percent owned) still gets the occasional save for the D-backs, and who are we to argue? … Trevor Rosenthal (5.6 percent owned) saved games on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for the Cardinals. Look for him to get any chances that arise over the weekend … Mets manager Terry Collins said Wednesday that with LaTroy Hawkins in need of some resy, hard-throwing rookie Vic Black (0.1 percent owned) might get some save chances before the end of the season. Collins also hinted that Black could close in 2014 if Bobby Parnell’s recovery from neck surgery doesn’t go well. Even if you don’t grab Black now, keep him on your radar.
Thanks for reading all year, folks. See you back here next season!
