Yanks’ Sabathia out until at least July

Sabathia has a 5.28 ERA in eight starts this season.

If you own CC Sabathia, make plans to be without him for quite awhile. Yankees GM Brian Cashman said Wednesday that Sabathia will return from his right knee injury "no sooner than six weeks from now." The New York Post quoted a doctor familiar with Sabathia’s treatment as saying that 8-12 weeks is a more likely timetable. Who’s going to start the pool on when Cliff Lee will become a Yankee? I’ll take July 10.

On to the rest of the news:

Reds 1B Joey Votto (knee) missed another game on Monday, but they’re still not ready to put him on the DL.

Rays SP Alex Cobb is scheduled to come off the DL to start on Thursday.

Streaming starters: Jason Vargas got knocked around last night, so we’re down to 31-18 for the season. Today’s pick is Colby Lewis (owned in 1.8 percent of FOXSports.com leagues) versus the Mariners, while Wednesday’s selection is the under-the-radar Phil Hughes (18.1 percent owned) at San Diego. Hughes has fooled me before, but I’ll buy into 40 strikeouts against six walks in 47 1/3 innings. This FanGraphs article about Hughes’ change in approach is interesting.

Indians 2B Jason Kipnis (oblique) hopes to start a rehab assignment this weekend.

The Cubs are tied for fifth in the majors with 378 strikeouts (nine per game). They host Masahiro Tanaka and the Yankees tonight. I predict 29 strikeouts for Tanaka, give or take a few.

Plenty of White Sox news: There doesn’t appear to be anything too serious going on with 1B Jose Abreu’s ankle; SP Chris Sale might be ready to come off the DL this weekend; and closer Matt Lindstrom left Monday’s game with an apparent ankle injury. Scott Downs and Jake Petricka finished the game for the Sox. If we’re speculating on saves here, I’d lean toward Ronald Belisario for now, but that’s a tepid recommendation.

Royals C Salvador Perez aggravated a hand injury last night, and will probably be out until Friday.

Nationals 3B Ryan Zimmerman – who is on the DL with a thumb injury – has been working out in the outfield. The Nats say they’re just trying to protect Zimmerman’s thumb, and I think I believe them. He’s not going to replace Jayson Werth or Bryce Harper, and they probably won’t move the seeimngly fragile Harper to center field in place of Denard Span. Let’s consider this a non-story until further notice.

Astros SS Jonathan Villar (thumb) was out of the lineup on Monday, but is expected to return tonight.

The Rangers aren’t sure if Tanner Scheppers will be a starter or a reliever when he comes off the DL. They need a starter more right now.

Jason Motte, who missed all of 2013 because of Tommy John surgery, will be activated from the DL today. No, I don’t think he has much chance of replacing Trevor Rosenthal as the Cardinals’ closer.

Rockies OF Michael Cuddyer comes off the DL today as well.

The Padres say that Andrew Cashner’s elbow issues will require "rest and rehab" as opposed to surgery. His return timetable is TBD.

See you back here tomorrow morning.
