Foot fracture for Trumbo
Diamondbacks OF Mark Trumbo has a stress fracture in his left foot, and will get a second opinion in the next day or two. After last night’s game, D-backs’ manager Kirk Gibson said, "I don’t have a timetable for you … I’m sure it’ll be extended."
Fantasy owners looking to replace Trumbo’s power have some widely available options, such as Michael Morse (owned in 28.8 percent of FOXSports.com leagues), Mark Reynolds (8.9 percent owned) and Mike Olt (0.7 percent owned). Sure, there are others, but you should be able to grab one of those three in standard mixed leagues. If you have questions about anyone else, send me a tweet (@jhalpin37).
On to the rest of the news:
From Baseball Reference: "Jeff Samardzija is the only pitcher in the last 100 yrs to go 7+ IP and allow 2 ER or fewer in his 1st 5 GS of a season and not earn a win." Samardzija has a 1.53 ERA – talk about bad luck.
Streaming starters: Nathan Eovaldi had another strong start, raising our record to 14-9 for the season and dramatically increasing the chances that this blog will try to legally adopt him soon. The weekend picks – I won’t be here tomorrow – are Jose Quintana (17.6 percent owned) at Detroit tonight; Rick Porcello (27.8 percent owned) at Minnesota on Friday; Dan Straily (17.8 percent owned) at Houston on Saturday; and Dillon Gee (22.6 percent owned) versus the Marlins on Sunday.
Michael Pineda … good grief. Look for a suspension of 8-10 games, meaning that he’ll miss two starts. Maybe this was a sneaky way for the Yankees to start limiting Pineda’s innings.
Dodgers’ ace Clayton Kershaw will make a rehab start on Friday. If he needs just two rehab starts, he could be back during a May 5-7 series at Washington.
Reds’ closer Aroldis Chapman threw to live hitters on Wednesday, and will do so again on Saturday. He’s getting closer.
Not a bad return for Cole Hamels.
White Sox OF Adam Eaton hopes to return in a day or two, but "will begin to wear a brace around his left knee," according to the Chicago Sun-Times. I don’t think I like the sound of that.
Did Mets’ manager Terry Collins really say Wednesday that Daisuke Matsuzaka could become his team’s closer? Or was I hallucinating?
Angels’ manager Mike Scioscia says he’s not ready to make a closer change, despite Ernesto Frieri’s 9.35 ERA. Joe Smith might be a good speculative add right now.
Look for OF Shane Victorino to come off the DL for the Red Sox today, and for 3B Will Middlebrooks to join him tomorrow.
Cubs OF Justin Ruggiano left Wednesday’s game with a hamstring injury. His status is TBD.
I think I’d look to sell high on Rangers SP Martin Perez (4-0, 1.42 ERA, 0.92 WHIP). I like all the ground balls, but he’s no ace, and someone in your league might think he’s heading in that direction.
Matt Lindstrom gave up a hit and a walk while closing out Wednesday’s win for the White Sox. Our day is coming, fellow Nate Jones owners! If our guy ever gets healthy, anyway.
See you back here Monday morning.
