Fantasy Buzz: Angels’ Hamilton to miss 6-8 weeks

Hamilton was hitting .444 with two homers before his injury.

See what happens when you slide head first into first base, kids? Angels OF Josh Hamilton tore a ligament in his left thumb on Tuesday, and is expected to have surgery that will keep him out of action for 6-8 weeks. Possible fantasy replacements for Hamilton, in order of ownership percentage, are Christian Yelich (owned in 34.6 percent of leagues), Kole Calhoun (24.9 percent owned), Mike Morse (7.1 percent owned), Marcell Ozuna (5 percent owned), David Murphy (1.3 percent owned) and the moderately speedy J.B. Shuck, who looks to be the lefty half of a platoon that will replace Hamilton in real life. Shuck is a "break glass in case of emergency" option for desperate AL-only owners.

On to the rest of the news:

Mariners SP James Paxton is on the DL with a strained lat muscle, but hopes to be back very soon. Taijuan Walker whiffed 10 batters in a minor-league rehab start last night, and could step into the rotation in place of Paxton as soon as early next week.

Twins OF Oswaldo Arcia has been placed on the DL with a wrist injury. Arcia took BP on Wednesday with hopes that he could play, but the team didn’t think he was quite ready. Since Arcia hasn’t played since Friday, he could return as soon as next weekend.

Streaming starters: Tanner Roark got skipped on Wednesday, so we’re still at 5-4 for the season. Today’s pick is Travis Wood (9.4 percent owned) versus the Pirates, while Friday’s selection is Tyler Skaggs (11.4 percent owned) against the Mets.

Dodgers 2B Dee Gordon stole his fourth base last night, in case you were wondering. He’s owned in just 22.3 percent of leagues.

White Sox OF Avisail Garcia injured his left shoulder on Thursday and "could be out for awhile," according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Garcia will have an MRI today, and if a DL stint is needed, Dayan Viciedo’s fantasy value will improve.

Orioles SS J.J. Hardy (back) will work out today, and hopes to be back in the lineup tomorrow.

The Rays seem to be on the fence about whether SP Matt Moore needs Tommy John surgery; we should know more today or tomorrow.

Marlins SP Jacob Turner (shoulder) is on the DL. Turner is owned in 0.3 percent of leagues, so that must mean something to somebody.

The Indians hope to get OF Michael Bourn back in the lineup on Sunday. In other Indians’ news, Trevor Bauer was very impressive yesterday. He’s heading back to the minors for now, but could return soon if he keeps pitching well.

Here’s an update on Reds SP Mat Latos, who still might return before the end of April.

Nice 2014 debut from Ervin Santana, huh?

Look for A’s OF Coco Crisp (wrist) to get at least one more day off.

Billy Hamilton finally stole a couple of bases! Woo-hoo!

See you back here tomorrow morning.
