Ref assaulted during prep game in Detroit
A fan threw a bottle onto the court and a referee was assaulted during a high school basketball game that ended early Thursday in Detroit.
The ugly incident took place at Winan’s Academy of Performing Arts, which was playing another charter school, Academy of Southfield.
“There was a bottle thrown onto the floor, but there was no one hit by a bottle,” Detroit Police Officer Phillip Cook said. “He (the referee) was assaulted. Simple assault. He was pushed around, received some scratches.”
Fans apparently reacted angrily after the ref called the game early.
“The ref canceled the game because Academy of Southfield, I guess there were some rule violations, so the ref canceled the game,” Cook said.
Cook said he did not have any more details on exactly what led to the referee having to stop the game. He also said police did not know at this point the identity of the person who threw the bottle.
Both schools were closed Friday because of a snowstorm. School officials could not be reached for comment.
