Former England batsman Boycott recovering from heart surgery

Former England batsman Geoffrey Boycott is recovering from quadruple open heart bypass surgery, his family said Tuesday.

In a statement posted on her father's official Twitter account, Emma Boycott said the 77-year-old Yorkshireman had the procedure in Leeds, northern England, on June 27 and spent 10 days in a cardiac critical care unit.

Responding to a post from a well-wisher, Boycott said he was ''resting,'' with his daughter typing the replies on his behalf.

Boycott played 108 tests for England between 1964 and 1982, scoring 8,114 runs - often slowly - at an impressive average of 47.72. He hit 22 test centuries and 42 half-centuries. His highest test score was 246 not out off 555 balls against India in 1967.

Playing for Yorkshire and England, Boycott was renowned for his defensive play - and ability to frustrate opposition bowlers - but more recently has become known for his punditry on television and radio.
