Afghanistan bats first against Sri Lanka at World Twenty20
KOLKATA, India (AP) Afghanistan captain Asghar Stanikzai won the toss and elected to bat against Sri Lanka in the Group 1 match at the World Twenty20 on Thursday.
Sri Lanka has struggled in the shortest format since it won the title in 2014, winning just four games and losing 10.
The defending champion is still waiting on the fitness of fast bowler Lasith Malinga, who handed over the captaincy to Angelo Mathews due to a knee injury during the Asia Cup, and was also left out of the playing XI on Thursday.
Afghanistan, coached by retired Pakistan great Inzamam-ul-Haq, has been a formidable associate member of the ICC and defeated Zimbabwe in the qualifying round to make it to the Super 10.
West Indies defeated England in the same group on Wednesday with South Africa the other team in the group.
