Wilkins scores with 2 seconds left, Richmond tops St Francis
The game was played early and moved to DeGol Field due to Hurricane Florence. It’s the second straight year the Spiders had a game moved due to a hurricane.
Zach Campbell caught a 12-yard touchdown pass to give Saint Francis a 27-23 lead with 1:10 left Richmond marched down the field, aided by a pass interference penalty, and had first-and-goal with seven seconds remaining. After Wilkins’ 6-yard TD grab, Saint Francis fumbled on the kickoff and Maurice Jackson returned it for a score.
Kevin Johnson completed 22 of 29 passes for 249 yards and two touchdowns for Richmond (2-1).
Cortrelle Simpson was left wide open down the right sideline for a 40-yard touchdown and the Spiders converted a long 2-point conversion for a 23-20 lead with 6:42 remaining.
Saint Francis (1-2) outscored Richmond 17-3 in the third quarter to take a 20-12 lead. Bear Fenimore connected with Kamron Lewis for a 15-yard TD and a 2-yarder in the frame.
