Utah State player, student charged with intimidating witness
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) A Utah State football player and another student have been charged with intimidating a witness in a burglary case against two other members of the football team.
Logan Police Chief Gary Jensen said that on April 5, 19-year-old freshmen Kevin Meitzenheimer and Dayshawn Littleton tried to hit the witness with their car and threatened to return and shoot the witness.
Police found an assault rifle in the car and arrested both men, Jensen told The Salt Lake Tribune (http://bit.ly/2p5NX4K).
The police chief said Meitzenheimer and Littleton were trying to prevent charges from being filed against two Utah State players accused in the theft of electronics from an apartment complex.
Court records show Meitzenheimer and Littleton were charged in late April.
Cache County jail Lt. Doyle Peck said Wednesday that both men were booked at the jail Monday but did not have to post bond or stay behind bars.
Messages left with Logan police seeking more details were not returned.
Meitzenheimer and Littleton do not yet have listed attorneys or a listed phone number where someone can be reached to comment on their behalf.
Meitzenheimer, a redshirt freshman linebacker from Moreno Valley, California, is charged with witness tampering, obstruction of justice, aggravated assault and failure to remain at the scene of an accident.
University officials say he's been indefinitely suspended from the football team.
Littleton, from Carson, California, is charged with witness tampering and obstruction of justice.
Last May, Littleton signed a letter of intent to play football at Utah State, but he never officially joined the team, Utah State athletics spokesman Doug Hoffman said. Hoffman said he did not have further details.
Police say Meitzenheimer and Littleton were trying to prevent burglary charges from being filed against football players Troy Murray and Jaylan Brown.
Murray and Brown, both redshirt freshmen, were arrested after officers connected them to pawn shop sales of stolen electronics. They have also been indefinitely suspended from the team.
Murray has pleaded not guilty to charges of burglary and theft. Brown has not yet entered a plea to a charge of theft by deception and does not yet have a listed attorney to comment on his behalf.
