Opening the first drive of the season with a pick-six thrown by J.T. Barrett had some Ohio State fans huffing and puffing over it. Would the junior starter struggle with an entirely new-look offense? The quick answer was an emphatic ‘no.’
The Buckeyes went on to outscore Bowling Green 77-3 after that and Barrett rebounded nicely, passing for 349 yards and six touchdowns while rushing for 30 yards and another score. He might be the top Heisman candidate in the Big Ten and one of the best quarterbacks in the nation.
Mike Weber also replaced Ezekiel Elliott nicely, rushing for 136 yards on 19 carries. It was Curtis Samuel who really showed off in the backfield, rushing for 84 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries as well as catching nine passes for 177 yards and two more scores.
Tulsa opened with a 45-10 win over San Jose State and Dane Evans led the offense despite not being fully accurate. He was 12-for-23 with 198 yards and a touchdown for the Golden Hurricane. Keevan Lucas emerged as his favorite target, catching six passes for 112 yards.
The run game finished as the strong point of the offense, accumulating over 300 yards on the ground, led by D’Angelo Brewer’s 164 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries.
