Texas high school player dies, sixth football-related death this season
A player in Texas has become the sixth high schooler to die from football-related injuries this season, USA Today reported.
Cam’ron Matthews, a junior at Alto High School, died Saturday after being injured during a game on Friday night. Reports did not state the nature of his injury, and the cause of death had not been determined.
Matthews collapsed on the sideline after telling teammates before a kickoff that he felt dizzy. However, Matthews stayed on the field for the kickoff, the Jacksonville Progress reported.
He was airlifted to a hospital in Tyler, Texas, and died early Saturday evening, Alto schools officials confirmed.
"I am very sorry to say that Cam’Ron Matthews has stopped his fight this evening," Alto High principal Scott Walters said on Facebook. "What an incredible young soul. Please keep Cam’s family in your hearts and prayers and please keep this incredible Alto community in your prayers."
