Texas Football: D'Onta Foreman Says He Played with Broken Hand

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 11:48 p.m. ET

D’Onta Foreman claimed to have played with a broken hand for Texas in the 2016 season.

D’Onta Foreman had a spectacular 2016 season for the Texas Longhorns. He put up 2,028 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns, going on to win the Doak Walker Award. This came during a discouraging year for UT, as they finished 5-7, so Foreman was one of their few bright spots.

Well, to add to his junior year accomplishments, the future NFL running back played hurt. In an interview with 610 AM in Houston, he told them that he played with a broken hand during the 2016 campaign (h/t 247Sports).

“I played during the season with a broken hand, honestly, that no one knew about,” Foreman said. “I kept it under wraps.”

This is an amazing feat to pull off, as Foreman had to use his hands to receive the handoffs from Shane Buechele, stiff arm defenders, and even fall on it when tackled. So who knows how much pain he played through during the season. It wasn’t enough to stop him from being sidelined, however, which led to his best year and a soaring stock for the 2017 NFL Draft, as he declared in the fall.

Foreman will head into draft season as one of the top running backs available. Where he goes in the selection show remains to be seen, with the combine, interviews, etc. still yet to play out. Playing hurt should help his case with NFL scouts since players often get banged up, but still return to the field. It’s not the best characteristic, but something that teams may look for to see how tough an athlete is.

D’Onta Foreman is set to head into the draft process soon and will likely be asked about his hand. Could this make for any type of issue?
