Stagg family defers to Big 10 on trophy decision

When it comes to keeping Joe Paterno’s name on or taking it off the Big Ten championship trophy, the family of Amos Alonzo Stagg will go along with the conference’s decision.

The Big Ten championship game winner is set to receive the Stagg-Paterno Championship Trophy. Stagg won 319 games in 57 years, most at the University of Chicago. Paterno, whose 409 wins are the most by a major college coach, was fired Wednesday because of the child sex abuse scandal at Penn State.

Robert Stagg of Grand Rapids, Mich., a great grandson of Amos Alonzo Stagg, said Thursday night his family will be honored to have the Stagg name on the trophy whether or not Paterno’s name is on it.

Big Ten spokesman Scott Chipman said a decision hasn’t been made.
