Rawlings leads Yale to 35-28 win over Mercer

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Kurt Rawlings threw for 344 yards and four touchdowns as Yale held off Mercer 35-28 in the first meeting between the schools on Saturday afternoon.

JP Shohfi hauled in two of those touchdown tosses while catching six passes for 152 yards. Reed Klubnik caught seven passes for 86 yards and a score for Yale (3-2).

The Bulldogs scored 21 unanswered points and led 28-14 at the half. Rawlings hit Shohfi on a 57-yard scoring strike for the first touchdown. The defense garnered the next score when Noah Pope sacked Kaelan Riley causing a fumble which Rodney Thomas II scooped up and returned 41 yards for a touchdown. Rawlings passed to Shohfi from the 2 for a score early in the second quarter for a 21-0 lead.

Riley threw touchdown tosses of 12 and 35 yards in the second half as Mercer (3-3) closed the gap in the final quarter. Riley finished with 333 yards passing and three TDs. David Durden hauled in three of those for 122 yards and two scores.
