WHAT’S AT STAKE?

The No. 20 Ducks jumped three spots in the polls after last weekend’s 62-14 victory over lower division Portland State. They’ll face a winless San Jose squad as their third and final nonconference tuneup before next Saturday’s Pac-12 opener against No. 9 Stanford. The Spartans lost 31-0 to Washington State last weekend and fell to FCS-level UC Davis 44-38 in the opener.

KEY MATCHUP

Oregon’s defense against San Jose State’s offense. The Spartans had just nine rushing yards on 23 carries against the Cougars, and mustered 109 total yards. Oregon’s defense has steadily improved under defensive coordinator Jim Leavitt, in his second year. Jalen Jelks leads the team in tackles with 15, tops among Pac-12 defensive lineman. He had nine tackles in the opener against Bowling Green.

Oregon: Herbert. The junior quarterback has been mentioned as a preseason Heisman candidate and he started his campaign with 10 total touchdowns through two games, nine via pass and one on the run. With Herbert in the game, the Ducks average 43.3 points per game.
