Oregon fans petition to get Marcus Mariota’s No. 8 retired now
This should be the most peaceful petition Oregon fans ever have to push in Eugene.
With Marcus Mariota’s college career officially over, as he declared for the NFL Draft last week, a group of Oregon fans have started a petition to get his No. 8 jersey retired immediately. It would be the first such honor for a former player.
"[Mariota] has selflessly brought so much to the school and has held a special place in the household of all Ducks fans," the petition reads. "Let us honor him and his legend by retiring his number."
The petition’s stated goal was 1,000 signatures, which it has already cleared. Oregon students are supporting the movement via Twitter:

The university has yet to announce any such plans, but surely the conversations are already in the works.
Oregon knows how special Mariota was to the growth of the football program and popularity of the university, which is probably why so much time and care was put into creating this wonderful tribute video to Mariota for when he won the Heisman Trophy:
A Ducks fan or not, no supporter of college football could deny that Mariota deserves the highest of honors at his alma mater. He was among the most brilliant talents the sport has seen.
