No. 15 Michigan State faces road test against Arizona State
No. 15 Michigan State (1-0) at Arizona State (1-0), 10:45 p.m. ET (ESPN).
Line: Michigan State by 6½.
Series record: Tied 1-1.
WHAT’S AT STAKE?
Michigan State is looking to bounce back from a shaky opener in what should be a tough road game. The Spartans trailed Utah State at home in the fourth quarter before scoring late in the 38-31 victory. Arizona State rolled over UTSA 49-7 in its first game under coach Herm Edwards.
Arizona State vs. Michigan State’s run defense. Edwards says he likes to pass to score and run to win. The Sun Devils did that with 266 yards rushing and four TDs passing against UTSA. Eno Williams led the way with 131 yards and a TD, but the Sun Devils face a much more difficult challenge this week. The Spartans were second nationally against the run last season, holding opponents to 95.3 yards per game, and limited Utah State to 25 yards on 25 carries last week. Take away the Sun Devils’ run game and the Spartans can make them one dimensional.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Michigan State: LB Joe Bachie. Michigan State’s junior had the key play to clinch the Spartans’ win last night, leaping in the air to deflect a pass before catching as he was falling down for an interception. Bachie also led Michigan State with 11 tackles, including 1½ for a loss.
Arizona State: WR N’Keal Harry. The 6-foot-4, 216-pound junior receiver is a match-up nightmare for anyone who tries to cover him. Last week, Harry had six catches for 140 yards and two TDs, including one for 58 yards after seeming to be surrounded by UTSA defenders.
