Entering Saturday’s matchup between USC and Alabama at Jerry’s World in Dallas, the question everyone wanted answered was this: If the Crimson Tide were to jump on the Trojans as many expected, would offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin back off, or put his foot on the gas pedal against his former team. Kiffin of course was USC’s head coach from 2010 to 2013, before famously being fired on the tarmac at LAX airport following a loss to Arizona State.
Well, we got our answer in a big way on Saturday. That’s because after falling behind 3-0 early, the Crimson Tide then poured it on, scouring the next 38 points. And Kiffin never really let his foot off the gas, as Alabama rolled to an incredible (and if you’re a USC fan, embarrassing) 52-6 victory. For a little historical perspective, it was the second worst loss ever for the USC football program.
The only #USC loss worse than this was to Notre Dame, 51-0, in 1966. John McKay told players after, “take a shower, if you need one.''
But for Kiffin, winning simply wasn’t enough. Instead, he went ahead and rubbed in the face of the Trojans on Sunday afternoon.
Check out this tweet below, where Kiffin, in a not so subtle way pokes USC right in the ribs. Yes, that’s his son wearing an Alabama jersey with a game ball. But read what’s next, closely: #3:14AM-LAX. There is nothing subtle about that: 3:14 a.m. appears to be the time that Kiffin was fired by the Trojans, at LAX, which is also referenced in the tweet.
Say what you want about Kiffin, but his offense appears as though it hasn’t missed a beat, even with the depature of quarterback Jacob Coker and Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry. And the scariest thing is, it will probably be better going forward, with star receiver Calvin Ridley held to two catches for nine yards.
As they say, "To the victors go the spoils," and there’s no doubt Kiffin is enjoying this one.
