Whiteman replaces Duane Woods, who led the effort to reform the bowl’s structure and resuscitate its image following the expense account and illegal political donation scandal that rocked the event last year.
Whiteman served on the special committee to investigate those improprieties.
The bowl’s executive director, Robert Shelton, a former University of Arizona president hired to replace the ousted John Junker, said in Tuesday’s announcement that Whiteman’s ”integrity and character” represent the bowl’s best qualities.
The bowl disclosed Monday that it probably owes $136,500 in back excise taxes for unreported employee compensation for the past five years and the illegal reimbursement of workers for political contributions since 2000.
