Former Texas Southern WR Griffin to declare for NFL Draft

(STATS) - Former Texas Southern wide receiver Derrick Griffin has signed with an agent and will declare for the 2017 NFL Draft through early entry.

The 23-year-old redshirt sophomore was dismissed from the team in September for breaking team rules, but was still playing for the men's basketball team before leaving it on Thursday.

The Houston Chronicle said the 6-foot-7, 240-pound Griffin signed with veteran NFL agent James "Bus" Cook, whose notable clients have included Brett Favre, Randy Moss, Calvin Johnson, Jay Cutler and Russell Wilson.

Griffin was the nation's third-ranked high school wide receiver in 2013. He originally committed to Texas A&M and signed a national letter of intent at Miami, but didn't qualify academically at either school before he enrolled at Texas Southern last year in his hometown of Houston. He had 36 receptions for 713 yards and 11 touchdowns - all team highs - in 2015, but only played in two games this season.

In basketball, he was the SWAC's player of the year, defensive player of the year and newcomer of the year last season.
