FCS team set to face FSU could be rocked by suspensions over bookstore violations

Published Nov. 15, 2016 3:42 p.m. ET

It's highly unlikely Charleston Southern was going to beat FSU this weekend, but whatever chance the FCS school did have is taking a big hit.

According to multiple reports, several (possibly even dozens) of the team's players are suspended for Saturday's game over a violation related to the stipend allotted for their school books.

According to running back Ben Robinson, the players were told by a bookstore employee that they were free to spend any leftover money after buying their required books -- and that the money was lost to them if they didn't.

According to Robinson and other players, that's just what they did -- buying pencils, paper, electronics and other items carried by the store.

Problem is, that's an NCAA violation -- one that the players were apparently unaware of and are paying the price for now (literally ... they are expected to pay back the money and miss the biggest game of their season).

Now, it's not likely all the suspensions -- especially if there are really as many as 40 -- will come for the same game, meaning some of the players could miss the Sept. 24 Monmouth game instead.

Their coach, Jamey Chadwell, is also facing a one-game suspension due to a social media-related recruiting violation. He'll sit out the October 8 game against Albany State.
