BYU football: Former TE Devin Mahina voted to Salt Lake Screaming Eagles roster
Former BYU football tight end Devin Mahina is playing ball again. This time, he’ll be suiting up for the Salt Lake Screaming Eagles of the Indoor Football League.
Devin Mahina played for BYU football from 2010-14. He caught 46 passes for 554 yards and five touchdowns while in Provo and participated in the Reese’s Senior Bowl.
He spent a few months with the Washington Redskins, but never recorded a stat in the NFL.
Now he’s got another chance to make plays on the football field. This time Mahina will be suiting up with the Salt Lake Screaming Eagles of the Indoor Football League.
But he made it in a unique way.
Mahina was voted on to the roster by the fans. The Screaming Eagles were announced in April 2016 by Project FANchise – a group that wanted to create a fan-operated football team. Fans are allowed to vote on most aspects of the team, including the rosters, uniforms, mascot and play calling.

That’s right. Play calling. Fans will be able to vote and call plays through the Screaming Eagles app and YouTube.
While Mahina was a tight end for BYU football, he’ll be switching to wide receiver for the Screaming Eagles. The switch is due to the Indoor Football League’s play, which features just three linemen and eight-on-eight play.
Mahina and the Salt Lake Screaming Eagles begin their season on Feb. 16 when they host the Nebraska Danger. The full roster and schedule can be viewed on the team’s official website.
