Analyzing the Penn State Depth Chart for the Rutgers Game

There are some noticeable changes on Penn State’s released depth chart for this week’s game at Rutgers.

It certainly wasn’t pretty, until maybe the fourth quarter, but Penn State was able to escape Bloomington last week with a win over the Hoosiers. While the victory kept the Big Ten Championship game hopes alive for the Nittany Lions, some injuries up front could be a case for concern.

Already down starting tackles Andrew Nelson and Brendan Mahon last week, tackle Paris Palmer left in the first half and returned sporting crutches and a leg brace. Right guard Connor McGovern was also banged up in the game.

Palmer is not listed on the depth chart, as Ryan Bates has been moved from left guard to left tackle. Sterling Jenkins has passed Will Fries as the backup at left tackle. Chasz is the starting right tackle this week, with Brendan Brosnan and Will Fries backing him up.

At guard, Steven Gonzalez moves up to the starting spot on the left side, while McGovern is still listed as the starting right guard.

There are no real notable changes on defense. Kevin Givens has flipped with Antoine White at defensive tackle and Brandon Bell is listed as the third middle linebacker instead of Jake Cooper.

John Reid has been moved back to the top of the depth chart at punt returner with Gregg Garrity, DeAndre Thompkins, and Mark Allen behind him. Backup punter Chris Gulla has been removed from the holder spot, as quarterback Billy Fessler is now listed as the top holder. Gulla was suspended for the Indiana game.
