A&M Transfer Kyler Murray Already Contributing to Sooner Attack
Sooner quarterback Kyler Murray is not eligible to play for Oklahoma for another year, but the Texas A&M transfer is already adding value to the program in 2016.
You won’t see the fleet of foot, mobile and highly shifty Murray on the field on Saturday against Houston, but you may well see his contributions to the Sooner preparation for the 2016 season opener.
The Sooners biggest concern in preparing to play the 15th-ranked Houston Cougars on Saturday is containing dual-threat quarterback Greg Ward Jr. The Houston QB possesses a style of play that has historically given the Sooners fits on the defensive end.
The 5-foot, 10-inch, 195-pound Murray has many of the same physical attributes as Ward, and the Oklahoma coaches have had the sophomore Sooner quarterback simulate Ward on the scout team as the OU defense prepares for what it will see on Saturday.
Head coach Bob Stoops has been thoroughly impressed with what he has seen in training came from the Texas A&M transfer. In an interview on Tuesday with the Oklahoma City Oklahoman, Stoops said:
Kyler’s done a great job stimulating Greg Ward. He’s (Murray) quick, fast, he’s a guy that’s played (for one season at Texas A&M).
“It’s only been a week,” the Sooner head coach said. “He was very impressive last week running around, making plays, getting to see what special explosiveness that he has.”
The Sooners are fortunate to have someone like Murray in camp to help them prepare for the explosive Houston quarterback, who can beat you with his legs as easily as he can with his arm.
We’ll be able to see how well it has helped come Saturday. But longer term, the Sooners are also getting a preview of what they will have in their own arsenal in the not-too-distant future.
