2017 Rose Bowl Odds: USC Favored Over Penn State

The 2017 Rose Bowl odds opened with No. 9 USC as a 7-point favorite over the No. 5-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions.

In their record 34th appearance in the Rose Bowl, USC is a touchdown favorite over Penn State.

The No. 5 Nittany Lions outrank the No. 9 Trojans and were seriously considered for the College Football Playoff, but oddsmakers are convinced that USC will have the advantage in Pasadena, per VegasInsider.com.

USC is considered one of the hottest teams in all of college football, finishing the regular season on an eight-game winning streak since falling to 1-3 to start the season.

In fact, the Trojans would theoretically qualify for one of the four College Football Playoff spots if Las Vegas was in control of the bids.

With that in mind, it’s no surprise that the Trojans are favored, especially considering a certain level of home-field advantage. USC can simply jump on the freeway to get to the Rose Bowl, where they have already played this season, while Penn State will have a long trip.

In addition to their eight-straight wins, the Trojans have won six-straight against the spread to improve their ATS record to 8-4.

That record would be even better if JuJu Smith-Schuster had scored an easy touchdown to end the Colorado game instead of taking a knee to let the clock run out.

USC has not lost a game in which they were favored this season.

The Lions have been strong against the spread to end their season as well, with a record of 8-4-1. All eight of those wins have come in a row since Oct. 1.
