Winthrop controls High Point from the start with 82-70 win

HIGH POINT, N.C. (AP) Xavier Cooks scored 20 points, Josh Ferguson scored 13 with 11 rebounds and Winthrop beat High Point 82-70 on Saturday night.

Winthrop never trailed as Bjorn Broman started the game with back-to-back 3-pointers and Cooks followed with a pair of free throws. Winthrop extended the lead to 20-9 on Adam Pickett's layup.

Anders Broman made a 3 and Josh Ferguson's dunk to end the half made it 41-22. High Point trailed by double figures the entire second half.

Bjorn Broman scored 17 points and Anders Broman added 15 points for Winthrop (16-9, 10-4 Big South). The Eagles shot 23 of 42 from the field (55 percent) and outrebounded High Point 42-22.

Andre Fox led High Point (12-13, 7-7) with 20 points and Jahaad Proctor finished with 17 as the two combined to shoot just 14 of 35 from the field.
