Texas Basketball: Longhorns Fall to Arkansas, 77-74

Texas could not come out of Saturday afternoon’s game with a win against Arkansas.

On Saturday afternoon, Texas basketball took to the hardwood in Houston to face Arkansas. The Longhorns had been going through a rough stretch over the past few games, and were looking to build momentum. The Razorbacks already had an 8-1 record coming into this, having been led by some of the SEC’s best players like Dustin Hannahs and Moses Kingsley.

The Longhorns started things off well after the first half, as they were up, 35-30. However, Arkansas roared back with a strong second half and took the game over.

What did Texas in was the Razorbacks free throw shooting. They were 29 for 31 from the line, making for an astounding 93.5-percent mark. 14 of these came from Daryl Macon, who was perfect from the line. He also had a career-high 23 points to lead his school to the win. In comparison to the Burnt Orange, they only shot 59.4-percent from the charity stripe (19 for 32) in the loss, including five misses from Tevin Mack.

Besides the poor free throw shooting, Mack led Texas with 20 points and 12 rebounds on seven of 16 shooting. He and Jarrett Allen even helped the team outrebound Arkansas, 45-41. Andrew Jones also looked superb with his 17 points and seven assists, the latter of which had been a game-high. These strong performances wouldn’t be enough, though, especially with the free throw shooting woes doing the Longhorns in.

Neither team shot particularly well from the field either. Texas hit their mark at 40.3-percent, while Arkansas had it at 35.5.

Texas actually had a decent chance of winning this late in the game. They rallied back with a 9-2 run to cut the Arkansas lead to 73-71. However, sharp free throw shooting helped the Hogs keep their lead in the final seconds and eventually have them win the game. Texas had a shot to win, but couldn’t do much with their last possession.
