Police to turn over records on Fine
The child sex abuse scandal involving former Syracuse assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine sparked new investigations Monday.
Fine, 65, was fired Sunday night in the wake of the abuse allegations levied against him by three men, including one former Syracuse ball boy and his stepbrother.
The US Department of Education announced Monday it would launch its own investigation to determine whether Syracuse violated a federal law requiring universities to disclose alleged criminal offenses that occur on campus, WSYR-TV reported.
Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police revealed Monday it had been in contact with Syracuse Police to gather information about an alleged abuse that occurred during a Syracuse road trip to Pittsburgh in 2002.
Syracuse Police also announced Monday they would hand over information from their investigation to the District Attorney’s office on Tuesday, according to WSYR-TV.
Former Syracuse ball boy Bobby Davis, 39, claims he was abused by Fine for several years in the early 1980s. His stepbrother, Mike Lang, 45, also alleges to have been abused by Fine, who served as an assistant coach at his alma mater for 35 years.
The third alleged victim, Zach Tomaselli, 23, told police he was molested at the age of 13 by Fine in a Pittsburgh hotel room in 2002. Tomaselli’s estranged father, Fred Tomaselli, claims his son is lying.
But the latest allegation was enough to see police search Fine’s home for more than seven hours on Friday, with the US Secret Service, Syracuse Police and New York State Police involved in the house probe, according to The Post-Standard.
Tomaselli, who The Post-Standard reported is facing sexual assault charges in Maine involving a 14-year-old boy, said he signed a police affidavit Wednesday.
Fine’s dismissal late Sunday came after the third allegation surfaced, followed by the airing of a recorded 2002 phone call allegedly between Davis and Fine’s wife, Laurie, that appears to support Davis’ allegations.
Davis has also claimed he had a sexual relationship with Laurie Fine, after he turned 18.
